Abstract

Substance use continues to be on the rise in our communities. To reduce substance use in our communities, The “Garage” would be a beneficial agency to implement. The Garage is a youth program that adopts the disease model and will provide youth with a variety of resources to support them and to meet their needs with a trauma-informed approach. The primary goal of The Garage is to provide support to youth affected by substance use by engaging with youth either struggling with their own use and or youth struggling with family or a friend’s substance use. All youth, at the Garage, will be provided support, case management, and referrals to community resources and services as needed with the youth in the driver seat. Case management will be based on the bio psycho social spiritual condition model. To further support the achievement of The Garage’s goals, The Garage will be open seven days a week to promote accessibility to support in a safe location for our local youth. To further promote accessibility to youth/young adults, and to help promote a supportive and comforting environment, The Garage will provide fresh food (soup) daily, snacks, showers, and internet to all youth and young adults. The Garage hopes to provide a safe and supportive environment where youth feel both empowered, comfortable to ask staff for help and build trust. In addition, The Garage will provide support circles, one-on-one support, educational classes, vocational opportunities, mentoring and resources.
