Sama Alnuaimi - Rethinking Public Space at the University of Washington Tacoma
Abstract
Universities in general whether it is public or private can play an important role in providing higher education. When thinking about the role of public universities that play in society, they have great economic opportunities. Public universities could offer lower tuitions and school fees. This is especially important for those with a few economic resources who can still attend a public institution. The location and the space around the University of Washington Tacoma as a public institution and its relationship with the public are giving its residents the chance to be more attracted to the city, to enjoy it more while also changing the face of the city. Public institution developments can also provide the surrounding community with a civic center in a way that it sets up as a social space for the larger community. Moreover, the role that public university plays in our society is that it promotes social life outside the university campus as community engagement. Developed an Urban Design proposal for the University of Washington Tacoma. The University of Washington Tacoma is located in the downtown of Tacoma, Washington. The University of Washington is considered a public institution that has 3 campuses located in 3 different cities Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma. The aim was to design the public spaces and circulation for the expansion of the University of Washington Tacoma campus site. In a way that it will bring both the community and the environment closer together. The proposal will improve street networks and transportation. At the same time, the aim is to bring back the unused lands and nature by proposing pathways, landmarks, and nodes.
