Abstract
Foster youth face immeasurable barriers in life, hindering their academic success and resulting in only half of all foster youth completing their high school education (Mountz et al., 2020). While many schools prioritize education for all students, this vulnerable population requires specialized support to have the best chance of reaching graduation. This project explores the various obstacles foster youth face within the educational system and identifies research-based interventions from which I generated practical recommendations to support their academic success. A comprehensive review of existing literature and research revealed core themes of the impact of barriers to education, stability, mentorship, early interventions, and collaborative support systems on fostering positive educational outcomes. Understanding the barriers to success that foster youth face emphasizes the critical role of educators who are prepared to support this vulnerable population. Further, the project highlights gaps in research, such as the need for longitudinal studies and consideration of cultural factors, and proposes future trends emphasizing personalized support services. Ultimately, the project heightens awareness of the obstacles foster youth face and informs educators and school districts on how they can make an impact, all with the goal of making education more equitable for all students in efforts to achieve academic and social success.
