Abstract
The article demonstrates how poetry and poetry therapy are useful tools in existentially oriented psychotherapeutic practice. This article represents a departure from most scholarship on poetry therapy, the majority of which is rooted in psychoanalytically oriented traditions. The paper gives a brief introduction to poetry therapy, explains the main principles of existential therapy and its congruence with poetry therapy. The article also presents exercises that can be used in existentially oriented practice. The case example mentioned in the article demonstrates the use of poetry and poetry therapy in existential psychotherapy. Poetry therapy is thus, an important expressive arts therapy congruent with many different theories and practice models. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)
